위안부 피해자들의 용기 있는 증언이 있었기에 비로소 우리는 이 아픈 역사적 진실과 마주할 수 있었습니다. 새롭게 조성된 기억의 터에서 위안부 피해자들과 그들의 지지 않는 목소리를 기리며 피해자들의 숭고한 용기가 세상으로 널리 퍼져 나가기를 바랍니다.

Because of the courageous testimonies of the Comfort Women victims(Military Sexual Slavery), we have come to acknowledge this historical truth. At this newly established site of remembrance, we pay tribute to the victims and their unwavering voices, hoping that their noble courage will resonate and spread widely throughout the world.

평화를 상징하는 보랏빛의 ‘빛줄기’

위안부 피해자 개개인을 기리기 위한 기림비를 따라 길을 걸으면서, 여리지만 굳센 식물의 줄기처럼 꼿꼿하게 서 있는 피해자들을 마주할 수 있습니다. 피해자로 인정된 247인의 이름이 보랏빛 빛줄기에 새겨져 있으며, 공식적으로 인정되지 못한 피해자들을 기리기 위한 이름 없는 은빛의 빛줄기도 함께 세워졌습니다.

The Purple ‘Stem(Ray) of Light’, symbolizes peace

As you walk along a monument to pay respect to each individual comfort woman, you will encounter the victims standing tall like delicate yet resilient plant stems. The names of 247 officially recognized victims are engraved on the purple stem of light, and alongside it stands a nameless silver ray to pay tribute to those victims who have not been officially recognized.

용기 있는 증언이 확산하는 길 ‘빛의 증언’ 

아픈 역사를 잘 기억하고 또한 되풀이되지 않도록 피해자들이 남긴 용감한 증언을 새겨 넣은 조각입니다. 증언은 시간순으로 기록되어 있으며, 기억의 터 내부로 연결되는 조각은 그 용기 있고 빛나는 목소리가 여전히 이어져 나가고 있음을 보여줍니다.

The ‘Testimony of Light’ represents the path of courageous testimonies spreading forth

It is a sculpture that is engraved with the brave testimonies left by the victims, ensuring that this painful history is remembered and never repeated. The testimonies are recorded chronologically, and the sculptural piece connects to the interior of the Site of Memory, demonstrating that their courageous and radiant voices continue to resonate.
